To bring tourists back after COVID, Korea government said "Let's exempt 22 countries temporarily" from April 2023. Those 22 are mostly countries with strong passports and low overstay risk - USA, UK, EU, Australia, Japan etc. First exemption until Dec 2024, then extended to Dec 2025, then Jan 15 2026 notice says extended and under review for full 2026. That's why searches spiked. Exempt means you skip K-ETA process entirely - no application, no fee. But you still need return ticket, hotel address, and must not have criminal record. Blogs like mine are helpful but always check official yourself. Go to www.k-eta.go.kr > Notice > Look for Jan 15 2026 notice "Extension of Temporary Exemption for 22 Countries". It says exemption extended until Dec 31, 2025 and under review for 2026 continuation. Save screenshot or print. Airlines check K-ETA at boarding gate via system. If you're from exempt country, system should show exempt, but sometimes airline staff in small airports don't know. Common reasons for rejection I saw: Photo not white background, typo in passport number, previous overstay in Korea, criminal record. Apply early - don't apply at airport. If rejected, you need to go to Korean embassy for visa, which takes days.
